South High Students Awarded Highest Honor in Boy Scouting

South High students Carson Brady and Kevin Cottone recently became eagle scouts and join an elite group of young men that represent just 1% of all boys who are involved in scouting.  To earn the rank of eagle, the boys were required to complete 21 merit badges in areas such as citizenship, emergency preparedness, environmental science, personal fitness, communications, family life, personal management and first aid.  In addition, the boys each had to plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project that would benefit the community.

Carson’s eagle project, “The Changing Face of Main Street, South Glens Falls,” in which he partnered with the Town of Moreau Historical Society, involved collecting the history of all buildings on Main Street in South Glens Falls from River Street to Fifth Street.  He worked with the scouts of Troop #9 to photograph all of the buildings, including houses and businesses, document as much information about these buildings as possible, and assemble all of this into a lasting archive for the Town Historical Society.  Carson shared that “History is happening now and it must be documented now for future generations.”  The project, which took over 200 hours to complete, is now available for the public viewing at the Town of Moreau Historical Society on Ferry Boulevard.

Kevin’s eagle project involved a partnership with the American Red Cross in Glens Falls.  For his project, he worked to create several large planter boxes that adorn the Red Cross building on Warren Street in Glens Falls.  He raised funds for the materials used to create the boxes through fundraising activities with Troop #9 and several troop members helped him to construct the boxes and put them into place.  Kevin stated, “The American Red Cross is a very worthwhile organization that helps many people.  I felt good to be able to help them.”

Carson is the son of Peg and Roy Brady, Jr. and Kevin is the son of Judy and Andy Cottone.  Both boys started their scouting program at Harrison Avenue Elementary School.
