Katelynn
Hoag's Marathon Story
On
February 17th 2007, Katelynn Hoag qualified to run in the 55
meter Hurdles at the New York State Indoor Track and Field
Championships. Unfortunately the meet was on the same
weekend as the South Glens Falls Marathon Dance. This made
for a tough decision. Especially seeing Katelynn is a senior
and it was her first and last chance to run for an Indoor
State Championship. As parents we told Katelynn we would
support her in whatever decision she made, but that it was
her decision to make. Her final decision was to give up her
spot in the Championships to help the people of our
community. She said “Seeing the joy on the faces of the
people the Marathon Dance helps is more important than
anything I would accomplish at the Championships.” I am
proud of my daughter for the decision she made. I know it
was a very hard choice. Katelynn has taught me a few things
this year. One of which is, it’s not always about “Me”. I
hope some of the people who read this will learn the same
things I have. After all there are more important things in
life.
